Weekly Thought March 19-25: God is Supreme

The word for this week is: “Supreme”.

The thought for this week is: God is one Supreme being.

Have you ever considered why it is that you believe in the existence of God? And, how do you respond to others who deny or doubt that God exists? Is there anything we can do to develop or even invite a more engaging response?

Let’s begin by returning to Genesis Chapter 1 for a review. Take note of every occurrence of the word “God”. Now note what activities God is said to do. Do those actions point to a personal being or an impersonal force? In the first verse, we come face to face with Elohim, the Hebrew word for God, as the awesome God of creation. The very word “Elohim” speaks of a God as one eternal being, having majesty and the power to create. We quickly learn in chapter 1 that everyone and everything else has had a beginning, but God has always been. The passage reveals that when God speaks, things happen.

Knowing Elohim to be a supreme being, capable of creation through his spoken word, we are now able to ask, into what situation in our life would we like God to speak with his creative power. What kind of difference would this kind of power make in our life? Think about it. Did he not create us?

When David contemplated the magnitude of God’s creation, he was struck by how insignificant one human being is. Now turn to Psalm 8 for our focus in this devotional. After reading Psalm 8, walk outside on a clear night and look into the heavens. Let yourself be awed by the majesty of a supreme being who could bring such marvels into existence by the power of his word alone.

Pray through the following Scripture and strive to memorize Psalm 8:1, “Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.”

Prayer:    Father in heaven, praise to your holy name. You have created the heavens and the earth and all that I see. Yes, you have even created me. I recognize you as one supreme being, able to work wonders in my life. Please give me strength, especially to those who question your being, that I may give a response that I know one supreme being who is my God. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
